Ofsted Registration Consultancy

Ofsted registration for children's social care services demands a clear understanding of the regulations, strong safeguarding arrangements and a service that is ready to operate. We help you prepare thoroughly for the service category you intend to run.

Different services, different requirements

Ofsted regulates several distinct types of children's social care service in England, and each has its own regulations, quality standards and expectations. Getting the category right at the start shapes everything that follows.

  • Children's homes are registered under the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and must meet the Quality Standards. This includes homes for children with complex needs, solo provisions and short break services.
  • Supported accommodation for looked after children and care leavers aged 16 and 17 has been regulated by Ofsted since 2023 under the Supported Accommodation (England) Regulations 2023, with its own set of quality standards. Supported accommodation is not permitted to provide care, which is an important distinction from a children's home.
  • Other social care services, such as independent fostering agencies and residential family centres, sit under separate regulations again. Our main focus is children's homes and supported accommodation, but we are happy to discuss other categories.

How we support you

  • Registration guidance. Explaining the process, the regulations that apply to your service category and the evidence Ofsted expects.
  • Statement of Purpose. Writing a Statement of Purpose that meets the regulations and genuinely describes the children or young people you will support and how.
  • Registered Manager application guidance. Helping your proposed manager prepare their application and understand the qualifications and experience expected.
  • Safeguarding documentation. Developing safeguarding, missing from care, behaviour support and related procedures tailored to your setting.
  • Children's services policies. A complete, coherent set of policies written for your service rather than downloaded.
  • Location and premises considerations. Helping you think through location risk assessment and suitability before you commit.
  • Operational readiness assessment. Reviewing staffing, training, recruitment files, records and systems before the registration visit.
  • Registration interview preparation. Practice and feedback for the applicant and proposed manager ahead of the fit person interview.

FAQs

Ofsted Registration: common questions

What is the difference between a children's home and supported accommodation?

Children's homes provide care and accommodation and are registered under the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015. Supported accommodation provides accommodation and support for looked after children and care leavers aged 16 and 17 and is registered under the Supported Accommodation (England) Regulations 2023. Supported accommodation must not provide care. The right category depends on the needs of the young people you plan to support.

Can you help us find a property for a children's home?

We do not act as property agents, but we can help you understand what to consider when assessing a property and its location, and support you with location risk assessment before you commit.

Do you prepare managers for the Ofsted interview?

Yes. We run practice interviews for the applicant and the proposed Registered Manager, focused on their knowledge of the regulations, the Quality Standards and their own Statement of Purpose.
